Levelland was surveyed as Hockley City, renamed in 1922 for its flat terrain, and has been the Hockley County seat since the county organized. The oil boom of the 1950s brought a refinery, a gas plant, and oilfield machine shops, and South Plains College opened its Levelland campus in 1958. The town grew from 1,663 residents in 1930 to 8,264 in 1950 and 13,809 in 1980, and the 2020 Census counted 12,652.
Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 put roughly 41 percent of Levelland's houses in the 1970s and 1980s, another 27 percent in the 1950s and 1960s, and only about 11 percent since 2000. A house from the 1970s or 1980s is now roughly 40 to 55 years old, which is when original kitchens, hall baths, windows, HVAC equipment, and electrical panels tend to wear out on the same schedule. Tackling them in one planned remodel usually costs less than chasing them one at a time.
