Older homes in Tech Terrace, Overton, and central Lubbock often still have 60 to 100 amp services, fuse boxes, problem panels, or ungrounded two-prong circuits never sized for modern kitchens, HVAC, and EV charging.

Retail choice arrived in 2024, but LP&L still owns the lines and meters inside the city, and only LP&L-authorized crews can disconnect and reconnect service. We book that at least three business days ahead so the outage stays to one day.

Wind and hail storms from April through June bring outages and power surges. Whole-home surge protection at the panel and a properly installed transfer switch for a generator are the upgrades worth considering here.
Many older Lubbock homes were wired for a smaller electrical load than today's households use. Signs you are outgrowing the panel include breakers that trip often, lights that dim when the AC or dryer starts, a fuse box or a full panel with no open spaces, and plans to add an EV charger, heat pump, induction range, or addition. A load calculation tells us whether the current service can handle what you want to add, or whether moving to 200 amps is the right call.
A typical upgrade replaces the panel and breakers, updates grounding and bonding, and replaces the meter base or service entrance cable when needed. The 2020 National Electrical Code that Lubbock enforces also requires a surge-protective device whenever service equipment is replaced. A Level 2 EV charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit, typically 40 to 60 amps. Code treats EV charging as a continuous load, so the circuit is sized at 125 percent of the charger's rating, which means a 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp circuit. If the panel is short on capacity, a load management device or a smart panel can share what is there instead of forcing a service upgrade.
For backup power, a standby generator on natural gas or propane with an automatic transfer switch starts on its own when the grid drops. A portable generator needs a transfer switch or a listed interlock kit, never a cord plugged into an outlet, because backfeeding the grid can injure utility line workers. We size generators to the whole house or to a panel of essential circuits, and we can tie the system into our smart home services for monitoring and control.
Rewiring makes sense when a home still has ungrounded two-prong outlets, cloth-insulated wiring, or knob-and-tube, or when years of additions have left a patchwork of circuits. Homes wired from about 1965 to the mid-1970s may have aluminum branch wiring, which the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends repairing with approved methods at every connection. New and extended circuits also bring current code protections, such as AFCI breakers in living areas and GFCI protection in kitchens, baths, garages, and outdoors.
Lighting is often the most visible upgrade. Layered LED lighting, with recessed lights, under-cabinet strips, and pendants on separate dimmers, changes how a room works, and tunable white fixtures can follow a circadian lighting schedule through the day. Because we also handle drywall and paint, the openings a rewire or lighting upgrade requires are patched, textured, and painted as part of the job.
