Older-Home Remodeling & Repair in Slaton, TX

Nextgen Blueprint serves Slaton from Lubbock, about 18 road miles southeast on US-84, and most Slaton projects start with an older house. By Census estimates about one in five Slaton homes was built before 1940 and nearly half before 1960, so foundation leveling, rewiring, repiping, and careful remodels matter more here than in the newer towns around Lubbock.

A Railroad Town's Housing Stock

Slaton was founded in 1911 as a Santa Fe Railway division point, and for decades it was the center of the railroad's largest division, with a Harvey House restaurant beside the tracks. The town reached 7,250 residents by 1970, then declined after the Santa Fe began moving its offices away in the late 1960s, and the 2020 Census counted 5,858. Much of the housing was built for the railroad years and the decades right after.

Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 put Slaton's median home at about 1963. Roughly 20 percent of houses were built in 1939 or earlier, another 27 percent between 1940 and 1959, and only about 11 percent since 2000. Houses from the railroad era are often pier-and-beam over a crawl space, and it is common for them to have been added onto, rewired in pieces, and replumbed more than once. That history is why a good quote on an older Slaton house spells out how conditions hidden behind the walls will be handled and priced.

What Slaton's Water Does to Old Plumbing

Slaton is a member city of the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority, and its 2024 water quality report lists Ogallala Aquifer groundwater from Roberts County and Lake Meredith surface water as its sources. The same report puts average hardness at 192 parts per million, about 11 grains per gallon, with a range of 120 to 264, and total dissolved solids around 811 parts per million. Water above 180 parts per million is classed as very hard.

In a house with galvanized steel supply lines, decades of that water leave scale and corrosion that choke flow and stain fixtures, and cast iron drains under older floors are often near the end of their life as well. In a kitchen or bath remodel on an older house, replacing the supply lines with PEX and adding a whole-house softener protects the new fixtures instead of exposing them to the same water that wore out the old ones.

Foundations, Permits, and Scheduling in Slaton

Slaton sits on the loamy upland soils of southeastern Lubbock County, with a clay subsoil and caliche below, and the USDA's reference site for the Acuff soil series is near town. The clay still swells and shrinks with the weather, and on an old pier-and-beam house that usually means shimming, replacing failed supports, and fixing crawl space drainage rather than the steel piers a slab needs. We start with a free foundation inspection, then do the leveling, then the drywall, door, and trim repairs, so one contractor finishes the job.

Inside city limits, Slaton's Building Services department requires plans examination for new homes, remodels, additions, decks, detached garages, carports, patio enclosures, and sheds over 200 square feet, submitted with two sets of drawings. Plumbing and electrical permits are applied for in person, with a master license and proof of insurance, and inspections are requested by calling the city at (806) 828-2000. We serve Slaton from Lubbock, a drive of about 25 minutes.

Remodels That Suit Slaton's Older Homes

Older houses reward a contractor who can handle structure through finish, because one repair tends to uncover the next. The work that fits Slaton's housing stock:

  • Foundation leveling for pier-and-beam and slab homes, followed by drywall, trim, and door repair.
  • Electrical panel upgrades and rewiring for houses still on original or piecemeal wiring.
  • Repiping galvanized supply lines and replacing failing cast iron drains.
  • Kitchen and bath remodels that keep original character, such as trim profiles and hardwood floors, while updating everything behind the walls.
  • Roof replacement after hail, with a hard look at attic ventilation and insulation in houses built long before modern energy codes.

Slaton questions

How hard is the water in Slaton?

Very hard. Slaton's 2024 water quality report lists average hardness of 192 parts per million, about 11 grains per gallon, with a range of 120 to 264, and total dissolved solids around 811 parts per million. Anything above 180 parts per million is classed as very hard, so a whole-house softener is worth budgeting with any plumbing or bath remodel.

What permits does Slaton require for a remodel?

Slaton's Building Services department requires plans examination for remodels, additions, new homes, decks, garages, carports, and sheds over 200 square feet, submitted with two sets of drawings. Plumbing and electrical permits are applied for in person with a master license and proof of insurance, and inspections are requested by phone. Confirm current requirements with the city before starting.

Are old Slaton houses usually pier and beam?

Many are. About one in five Slaton homes was built before 1940, and houses of that age are often pier-and-beam over a crawl space. That is usually good news for repair, because the supports are accessible, so leveling means shimming or replacing piers and fixing drainage rather than lifting a slab. A free foundation inspection tells you which you have and what it needs.

How far is Slaton from Lubbock?

About 18 road miles from downtown Lubbock, southeast on US-84, which is Slaton Road leaving the city, or roughly 25 minutes. We serve Slaton from Lubbock, so estimates and site visits are scheduled the same way as any Lubbock job, with a little more drive time in the plan.
