Shallowater began in 1909 as a railroad townsite, celebrated the arrival of the Santa Fe line in 1913, incorporated in 1955, and counted 2,964 residents in the 2020 Census. Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 show two distinct generations of houses. About 23 percent of the town's homes were built before 1960, most of them in the 1950s, and roughly 35 percent have gone up since 2000, with building still continuing in the 2020s.
The two groups need different things. The 1950s houses are at the age where original electrical panels, galvanized supply lines, and cast iron drains come due, and their small kitchens and single hall baths are the usual remodel targets. The post-2000 homes are more likely to need a first roof after a hail season, drainage corrections around the slab, and upgrades to builder-grade finishes.
