Level 5 is the top finish in the Gypsum Association's GA-214 standard: a full Level 4 finish plus a thin skim coat over the entire surface. It evens out the texture and absorbency difference between paper and joint compound, so seams and screws do not show through under side light, cove lighting, deep colors, or eggshell and glossier paint. We apply it on new drywall, on existing walls, and on ceilings after texture removal.

Note 01
Big windows and strong afternoon sun on the South Plains throw raking light across walls, the exact condition where seams and screws show through paint. Level 5 matters most in east- and west-facing rooms.

The Gypsum Association's GA-214 standard, currently titled Levels of Finish for Gypsum Panel Products, defines finish levels from 0 to 5, running from bare hung board to a fully skimmed surface. Most homes are finished to Level 4 and then textured or painted flat. Level 5 adds one step, but that step covers every square inch of the wall.
Level 5 costs more because it is mostly skilled labor: another full coat over every surface, more dry time, and careful sanding. It earns that cost where light and paint would expose a Level 4 wall. That means eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss paints on smooth walls, deep colors like navy and charcoal, long hallways and tall walls washed by windows, and walls grazed by LED cove lighting or recessed wall washers. It is also the right base for venetian plaster and other specialty coatings.
For a textured bedroom in flat or matte paint, Level 4 is usually plenty, and the difference is better spent elsewhere. Many homeowners split it: Level 5 on the feature wall, the great room, and ceilings with cove lighting, and Level 4 everywhere else. Most Level 5 work in existing Lubbock homes starts with texture. Orange peel and knockdown can often be skimmed over once the wall is cleaned and primed, while heavy textures and popcorn ceilings usually come off first. Ceiling texture applied before the 1980s should be tested for asbestos before anyone scrapes or sands it, following EPA guidance.
Plan the sequence with the rest of the project: Level 5 goes on before new flooring, cabinets, and painting. Low humidity here dries compound fast, which helps the schedule, but each coat still needs to dry fully before the next one, or it can shrink and show later. We seal off the work area and sand with HEPA-filtered vacuum tools, so you can usually keep living in the rest of the house while we work.

All joints, corners, and fasteners are taped and embedded with the first coat of compound.
A wider second coat goes over joints and fasteners and dries fully before the next pass.
The final joint coat is feathered wide and fasteners get their third coat. This is where Level 4 ends.
